RMO: Regional Mathematical Olympiad conducted by HBCSE on behalf of NBHM and DAE is the first step to appear in Indian National Mathematical Olympiad.
Announcement for RMO-2009
The Regional Mathematical Olympiad--2009 (RMO-2009) will be held on Sunday, November 29, 2009.
The RMO in West Bengal is meant primarily for students of Class XI and XII studying in any school/college in West Bengal. With a policy of "catch 'em young!", also allow bright students of Class IX & X to appear for the RMO. As special cases, exceptionally talented students from Class VIII with very strong recommendations from the school may be allowed to appear at the discretion of the Regional Coordinator.
At present, about 30-35 students are selected for the next step, the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO), to be held on Sunday, January 17, 2010. At most six best students of Class XII are selected.
Please note that the RMO is the first step in selecting the Indian team for the International Math Olympiad (IMO)! This requires special talent in problem-solving and interest in Mathematics. It is not meant for the average or even good student who does not have this knack.
West Bengal test centres are located at Bankura, Berhampore, Burdwan, Kolkata, Kharagpur, Purulia, Santiniketan and Siliguri.
There is no application form. Please apply on plain paper giving Name (in block letters), Mailing Address with Phone number & e-mail address (if any), Class, Name and Postal Address of the School and Centre preferred. Please attach a recommendation letter from the school authorities (Principal/Math teacher) to the following effect:
- For students of Class VIII : "In terms of mathematical abilities, the candidate is one of the best this school has seen in last five years".
- For students of higher classes : "In terms of mathematical abilities, the candidate is among the top 10% of his/her class".
RMO awardees of any earlier year do not need such recommendation.
The fee is Rs. 75/- per candidate. This should be sent as a DD drawn on any nationalized bank in favour of Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta payable at Kolkata.
It is preferable that all applicants from the same school send their applications together through the school, with a single DD. Please attach a typed list of all applicants for speedier processing. In this case, we send the admit cards and study materials to the school. Please add Rs. 100/- to the total DD amount for postage. If more than ten candidates are applying together, please add another Rs. 10/- per additional candidate.
Applications not sent through school should be accompanied by a self-addressed unstamped 12" × 6" envelope and Rs. 25/- should be added to the DD amount for postage.
Applications should be sent to : Professor Rana Barua or Dr. Pradipta Bandyopadhyay, Joint Regional Coordinators, Stat-Math Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, 203, BT Road, Kolkata 700108.
You may also drop completed applications in a drop-box located at the Stat-Math Office, ISI, Kolkata.
Applications will be received from July 27 to October 23, 2009.
